Respectfully returned to Sub-Commissioner Dist Jackson, who will inform himself and this office upon what authority the tax of $4 25 was collected.

By Chap 73, Laws of Miss passed Nov 1865, "on each and every male inhabitant of this State, between the ages of 21 and 60 years the sum of one dollar shall be assessed levied & collected". This will account for a portion of the tax. Upon what authority or pretended authority is the balance collected?
