I have the honor to make the following report of my progress to date.

I have stopped at most of the landings on the river from Vicksburg, on both banks, and as far as I have been able to ascertain, the amount of destitution has been greatly exaggerated, on the line of the river. I have information that the principal amount of destitution on the Mississippi side cannot be reached from the river, as there is no connection with the back country, owing to the swamp being overflown.
