Beautiful CARLISLE and Cumberland County...
THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICAN HISTORY*
With the influence of history still evident in towns and countryside this area is also one of nature's wonderlands-fertile valleys, beautiful lakes and streams, hills and ranges of the Cumberland mountains, and things of interest for all Americans.
Since the coming of the first white man in 1720, Carlisle and Cumberland County have been prominently identified with people and events that signaled turning points in American history.
Named for Carlisle, England, the town was laid out in 1751 and became the county seat.

Dickerson College, chartered in 1783, and 10th Oldest college in U.S., is a modern, thriving college. "OLD WEST", pictured here(built in 1804) was designed by Benjamin H. Latrobe, who was architect of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Serving first as a frontier defense against the French and the Indians, Carlisle became the scene of significant incidents in the Revolutionary War. In Carlisle preludes to the writing of Declaration of Independence took place. It was the home of Molly Pitcher, famed heroine of the Battle of Monmouth. Here munitions works were established for Washington's army. Later, in 1863, it was the farthest north penetration of the Confederate forces, and its courthouse today has shell marks left from that encounter.
