July 28 - visit to Pak Warno Waskinto, mask & wayang golek maker;

an elderly man, assisted by 3 of his children & grandchildren (anak den cucu) - began making masks in 1932 because he "likes them" (karena senang aja) - no one really taught him (belajar sendiri) & his father was not a maskmaker - early in his career, however, received an order from the then-new museum Sono Budoyo to make masks for the museum collection - the designs from were made by Pak Warno himself, but corrected and improved in many particulars by Pak J.L. Moeno and Pak Kuswaji, former a Dutch archol. and latter a batik painter, both then with the museum

now makes 3 basic types of products:
1. wayang krucil/klitk - flat wooden puppets used only for Panji stories
2. masks of over 90 types
3. wayang golek puppets (3 dimentional

puppets used for the Panji, Purba (Ramay & Mak.) and also an Islamic cycle of stories -also mounts ie horses & tigers) - formerly made wayang kulet, but stopped  because "if the quality wasn't good I lost money" (kalau mutunya tidak baik saya rugi)

still however makes some accessories, ie small leather kris's, for the wooden puppets

raw mat: 1 kayu jaranan, a white wood, for the masks, puppets, & golek heads & stems 2 scraps of leather, batik, velvet, gold trim etc. for golek costumes 3 powder paint purchased from hardware store

-the wood purchased from various places, wherever he can get it, & sometimes travels as far as Semarang, & Kemiri (south of Solo) to get it 
-7 large logs of 1 1/2 meter each cost Rp. 12,000

process: 1. wood is cut into small blocks the size roughly of a mask 2. blocks are soaked in water in a dirt pit near the house for a year,- water in ditch is kept moving thru irrigation-like system -  purpose
