we next visited 2 pondok in the same village which are making traditional rencong with wood, brass + ivory handles
owner wanted 20,000 Rp for a small ivory + brass recong,[[sic]] 8000 Rp for a wood + ivory one
rencong blade must use what they call "white iron" ("besi putih") - main source ship engines, a certain part - an agent brings it in to the village
1 kilo white iron enough to make 16 small rencong blades, or 12 medium
1 kilo sells for 1000 Rp

-they get gading (ivory) for a gold dealer (tukang mas) - some is imported ((most, probably - no wild elephants left in Indonesia)) - they deal w/ a tukang mas on Jl. Perdagangan (Toko Tjahaya Bintang, Keci Demi, probably Banda Aceh)
- they get brass from old bullets and also from 'plat' (plate) - brass comes from an/the agen also
- 3 people can make 1 med-sized rencong a day

next visited ceramic village of Atiuk, about 15 min. from Banda Aceh
- enrolled in a 2nd-yr. provincial project-training course to teach them to make design objects out of cement + sand (see above p. 10)
-stopped at household making large red clay water pots, painted inside + out with cement wash - pots are modeled entirely by hand, the use of the slow wheel being unknown in this area
clay comes from the sawahs, the women carry it back on their heads
