Respectfully returned to Asst. Com. Vicksburg Miss.

Mrs Atkinson states that Caroline has never applied for her children since leaving them in 1863. Caroline went off in the night, and the children were found next morning. they were taken up to the house, and since that time have taken care of them.

States that in November 1865 she applied to the Bureau for rations &c for the children or for orders regarding them, in reply she received a letter from Capt. Buckwater Sub. Com. Meridian Miss. (Copy herewith inclosed) States that in December 1865 the two children were bound to Mr Atkinson, he giving bond of twelve hundred. ($1200) Dollars. Mrs Atkinson expresses her willingness to give up the children provided they can be released from the bond and receive some compensation for the care and attention bestowed on them. Asks that she be allowed to keep them unless paid for the care &c. as they are just now commencing to be useful. The bond requires them to be taken care of and educated - they are now being taught to read and write.
