his wife Margaret and Fanny Burnette in the county court of Hinds County, which was nonsuited on certain objections made by the counsel of the undersigned - another suit was then brought by the same parties, founded on said contract against him in the same court, which was tried fully, at great length and fairly, on the 25th and 26th days of September last, and the jury so far from finding any thing owe to said freedmen, found a balance one to the undersigned, from overpay merits, &c, of $34.00 which must at once released by his counsel with his consent.
The undersigned then supposed that the litigation with said freedmen was at an end, as they had selected their own tribunal, had their case free, and fairly tried and been defeated on its merits. He did not then suppose that they would be allowed to litigate the matter over again before the Freedmens Bureau or any of its officers. But in this he was mistaken, as about the 17th day of November 1867. he was notified by an officer of the Bureau at Jackson that the matter would have to be again examined by referees appointed under an order issued perhaps from your own headquarters, but the number of which is
