[[strikethrough]] At tea [[/strikethrough] The evening was extremely dark and at about 8PM - as I left Smiths house I heard a [[strikethrough]] l [[/strikethrough]] deadened report like that of a distant common shot followed by a rumbling noise of 3 or 4 seconds & a second fainter report like the echo- 
Later in the eve the same sound was heard twice more, as at first, off in the direction of Akoutan [[Akutan]]

Sept. 24th
Smith tells me that during last winter, he frequently heard [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] reports like those I heard last eve, and that they are produced by subterranean shocks [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] in Akoutan [[Akutan]] Volcano. The last one we heard on board last eve - was accompanied by a [[strikethrough]] faint [[/strikethrough]] slight but distinct shock which we felt in the cabin of the vessel as though a cannon had been fired close by -
The top of Makushin volcano showed up bare of snow in hard rocky outline yesterday morning with a jagged belt of snow encircling it lower down & extending down into the several glaciers
