Bureau Refugees Freedmen & A.L. Office Agent Sub Dist-McNutt McNutt Miss April 3rd 1868 Captain S.C. Greene, A.A.A.G. Bu R.F. and A.L. For State of Miss Vicksburg Miss. Captain, I have the honor to make the following statement relating to case between Mr. Alfred Murdock Planter and Freedman James Pate, both of Sunflower Co. Miss, and would respectfully request that definite instruction be given me in the premises. On or about the 1st of Jan 1868. James Pate freedman entered into a written contract with Alfred Murdock, Planter, to labor as Field Hand for the year 1868. The Planter complains that the Freedman left without any provocation whatever, hiring himself at another place. The Freedman was addressed by myself, notifying and requiring him appear at this office and explain his reason for not com complying with his contract with Mr. Murdock.
