Vicksburg Miss May 25" 1868 Respectfully returned with the information that upon an investigation of this affair I find Mr. Huggins's statement correct - The assault upon both Huggins and the soldier was without cause. I left Greenwood before day break on the morning of the 22" of May and made the attempt to arrest the man Pollard - but owing to the fact that Bayous Creeks and Rivers were so high his friends notified him of my coming and he was secreted and could not be arrested. E. C. Gilbreath 1 Lieut. 24" U.S. Inf.
