Sir,
In regard to a difficulty that occurred on the day of the election at this place - I would respectfully state that I investigated the matter - and understand it as follows - a party of boys (white and black) were marching with drums & flags cheering loudly for the Democracy up Green street and when near the corner of Green & Croker it's met another party of boys & negroes carrying flags and cheering for the Republicans some words passed when some one threw a brick which struck the drum carried by the party first mentioned - who in return charged the Republican procession and took some banners and tore them up - The constables say the reason why the deputy sheriffs or themselves did not arrest the parties was the crowd was too great to see or determine who had committed wrong - You Sir coming up at the moment ordered all parties off the ground which they immediately obeyed - Capt. Lowe the Sheriff was in another part of town at the time the occurrence took place - near the voting
