Hazelhurst. July 25th, 1868
Lieut. Churchill.
U.S. Army. Hazelhurst. Miss.

Dear Sir.
Having been requested by you to make a statement as to what came under my observation on Wednesday July 1st - the day of election at Hazelhurst - with regard to a difficulty between certain persons at the corner of Green and Croker streets - I herewith submit the following statement ~~~ I was standing on the north side of the above "corner" - when I discovered a party of Coloured men coming up the Hill from the direction of S.P. Harveys house - with Banners & Republican party tickets & cow sticks - I also saw a party of white and coloured boy's and men (mostly boys) coming up croker street with Drums - cheering for Democracy - The two parties met at the above corner - & were soon promiscuously Mingled together amidst a good deal of Noise & confusion from the drums & the mingled voices of the crowd - they then moved down Green street to nearly opposite Mr. Kilpatricks stable - where I saw a piece of Board pass over the crowd - which was soon followed by several brickbats - Thrown by both parties [[]strikethrough]] thought [[/strikethrough]] then the party of col'd men commenced retreating down the hill, in the direction from whence they came
