Respectfully returned to Brevet Major General A. C. Gillem  - with the information, that in compliance with endorsement contained herein, dated Office Assistant Commissioner for Miss. Vicksburg Miss. January 24th 1868. I proceeded to Shubuta. Miss (Clark Co.) to investigate the complaint made by G. H. Lowe in behalf of freedmen. and found the plantation refered to located in Wayne County. Miss. I therefore took no action in the case - The guardian of the heir to the estate- C. D. Lang- has declined to make a settlement with the freedmen - It is estimated that there are (6000) Six thousand bushels of Corn on the plantation - The freedmen with whom I conversed state that they are suffering for want of food, and claim that they would be comfortable if they could obtain justice. The following are the names of Overseer and freedmen who had charge of the different gangs that worked the plantation.
