Greenville Miss Aug 26 1868 Maj Genl A.C. Gillem } Vicksburg Miss } D Sir In the matter of the claim of Thomas Gibson freedman against the late firm of Shipp, Bourges & Co of New Orleans, for proceeds, five bales Cotton, the undersigned formerly a member of said firm, begs leave respectfully to submit the following facts. The firm above named furnished L Robt H. Carter A&M of Est of A.G. Carter during the year 1867 supplies for the cultivation & working of Solona & Woodstett Plantations to the sum of about 16000$. In the fall of 1867 a controversy having arisen between the A&M of Est and the laborers in regard to the payment of the latter, the latter refused to permit the Cotton raised during the year to be shipped and claimed that a large amount was due them by the Estate. The existence of these facts forced the undersigned to make a visit to said plantations with the hope of settling the controversy and allowing the cotton to go to market. The A&M claimed that no indebtedness existed by the Est to the Laborers, as he had paid them all wages due. In this attitude of affairs, the firm of Shipp Bourges & Co as supply merchants to Carter, claimed the right & privilege of shipping & controlling the cotton.
