We've looked at raps now to find both by their content and by their speed,
[00:33:27]
there's also another tradition which is integrally related with these others,
[00:33:31]
something that's developed quite a bit of popularity in Philadelphia in recent years and it's simply called the voices.
[00:33:37]
Now, when you speak to a rapper of the voices, what you're talking about is
[00:33:43]
having him or her use a series of different voices in the course of the rap,
[00:33:50]
sometimes the voices are used in dialogue so that you actually have a conversation going,
[00:33:55]
where it's only 1 person rapping.
[00:33:56]
At other times, you're simply using a lot of vocal effects to create interest to get the crowd's attention.
[00:34:02]
MC Caesar is a master voice master in Philadelphia. Caesar could you give us an idea of some of your voices and why you started using them?

[00:34:12]
{SPEAKER name="MC Caesar"}
Well I started to use them because um Nel is the DJ, okay? And he used to ask, he used to ask me to do something while he would um, spin the records and he used to use like an introduction record like a space record, [[someone does an imitation]]

[00:34:30]
Yeah, one of those.

[00:34:32]
So I created voices and all the other MC's started using them so they started to be an art form in Philadelphia and it traveled you know and expanded. It went as far as New York and everything.
[00:34:43]
And we didn't have synthesizers to synthesize our voices, and we didn't have pitch controls cause that's what they use, pitch control, so we just used you know like our voices and brought out our voices, can I have some uh reverb?

[00:34:59]
and it went like this
[00:35:00]
[[unintelligible sounds]]

[00:35:02]
[Deep Sound Voice]
[Squeaky voices in background while humming begins]
You are about to astro travel to the amazing sounds of the grand master Nel, but don't chip in.

[00:35:12]
[Alien voice]
And I, the almighty MC Caesar [doon doon, doon, doon, doon, doon, doon, doon] would like to bring Washington D.C. aboard

[00:35:19]
[Alien voice starts echoing/fading away, humming continues] bring aboard, bring aboard, bring aboard.

[Squeaky voice]

Gremlins.

[00:35:25]
[inaudible]

[00:35:28]
[squeaky voice]
Gremlins

[00:35:30]
[laughing]
[high pitched inaudible]

Transcription Notes:
Some typos and timestamped segments should be roughly a sentence or less. Not sure if the imitates sounds and voices should be transcribed from last time stamp.
