Alfred J. Pike, white, sworn: Registered and voted the Conservative Ticket - Magistrate before the war - Did not aid rebellion in any way - Did not [[besway?]] any person to engage in rebellion

- Recalled -
Never had Confederate Bonds in any possession - did not invest in Confederate Bonds - I was no Bank Director, nor held any other office - Never advised investment in Confederate Bonds - My father in Law invested in Confederate Bonds, I advised him not to do it - In July 1863 I funded $4000.00 or $5000.00 with the Confederate Officer in Greensboro, and was to get a Bond for that amount - never got anything for it except a Certificate of Deposit. - When I paid my Taxes, I gave that paper to the Sheriff and he gave me on return several certificates - I have the certificate at home - (: witness was required to produce the papers for inspection, which he did by sending them by Wm H. Scott. Copes of 2 of these certificates are respectfully annexed marked "G." - They appear to be certificates entitling the holder to Confederate Bonds.-)
William Davis, white, sworn: Registered and voted the Conservative Ticket. - was Constable before the war - held no Office during the war - I was drafted into the State Service, the Homeguards, in 1864, and remained in that Service until the close of the war - I was a private in the Homeguards - was doing duty in the State, guarding Commissary Stores etc - I assisted in arresting Deserters and forcing them back into Confederate Service - Homeguards were made up from Militia and other Officers, and were thereby exempted from Service in active Confederate Army - I had been Captain of Militia before and during the war, and was a Militia Offcers a member of the Homeguards, which was a military organization subject to State Service X - was camping at Kingston with my Company - I was over 50 years of age when I was drafted but according to the records I was not yet 50 - I claimed exemption on account of my age but was not exempted
