Dear Alfred:

I know you well enough, and your desire for fairness to all, to tell you of the disappointing surprise I had this morning when I saw the Art News.

It had not arrived when you were good enough to call me up yesterday, otherwise I would then have called your attention to the fact that my firm's name was omitted in connection with the purchase of the INGRES drawing, by the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.

As the name of Wildenstein appears just above, in mentioning the purchase of the Seurat, I am at a loss to understand the partiality.

Furthermore, in view of the fact that this drawing was exhibited under my firm's name, it was not through ignorance on the part of the person writing the article; the more so that your office asked me for a photo.

I know that at times in the past we have had similar disappointments, but thought that had all changed, and with your new policy of mentioning art dealers, such incidents would not again occur.
