at the 1931 National Air Races.

By serving as a competitive laboratory, the National Air Races exert important influence on aeronautical development. Flying Skill, manufacturing ability, and all phases of engineering genius are encouraged to greater accomplishments.

As tangible evidence of its belief in the usefulness of competitive events in furthering the progress of aviation, Shell has established the "Shell 3-Kilometer Straight Away Speed Dash Awards" shown above, which are presented each year together with plaques and liberal cash prizes.

Major James H. Doolittle, Manager of the Aviation Department of Shell Petroleum Corporation, and Lieutenant James G. Haizlip, his assistant, are constantly developing Shell Aviation Gasolines and Shell Aircraft Oils to guarantee to leading commercial transport companies and pilots everywhere the highest standards of performance and reliability.
