A Symphony of the Sky
Hundreds of pilots and airplanes from all parts of the country and abroad-- Giant dirigibles and tiny gliders pacing through the air-- Special speed planes hurtling through the sky-- Derbies from all sections of the country terminating at the airport-- Motors whirring from morn 'til nights-- Planes overhead in all directions-- FAMOUS FLYERS, DIGNITARIES and the INDUSTRY'S PERSONNEL in all their glory-- And hundreds of thousands of eager spectators-- THAT'S THE NATIONAL AIR RACES!
This is the laboratory of the industry which becomes at the same moment the most enticing and cleanest sporting event of the age. It gives to the world FASTER SHIPS, MORE RELIABLE MOTORS and SAFER TRANSPORTATION. Each year it sees new names over come the horizon, commanding public attention and national prominence. Names of fearless men and women who have dared to prove or disprove the product of aeronautical engineering genius.
At this annual drama of American aviation, international racing competition makes its bow. This year will witness new world's records. Closed course racing will "ARRIVE" as an intense and popular sport of the first degree. The American National Air Race project now stands unchallenged as the peer of INTERNATIONAL AVIATION CLASSICS. Frankly, I admit a personal thrill in seeing this program of foreign competition materialize.
Cleveland sponsors of the National Air Races have evidenced untold fortitude in their continued support of this project. The intense, efficient and loyal activity of the many committees and staff, numbering several thousand, has been collectively effective-- individually devoid of all lethargy. A project of such magnitude can only be successful through complete inter-committee and inter-department co-ordination. Support of the industry has been overwhelming in face of present economic conditions. Through personal sacrifices, faster and more efficient airplanes in all power groups have been developed.
The true objective and hope is that the 1932 National Air Race project will be-- and success civically-- a success technically- successful in that it builds a broader confidence and greater acceptance of aviation by the layman public-- and finally a success artistically- A SYMPHONY OF THE SKY.
