Regulations Covering the 1933 
Gordon Bennett Balloon Race

THE 1933 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race is held under the general regulations of the F. A. I. and under special regulations governing it adopted by the F. A. I.

In addition, the following supplementary regulations of the Contest Committee of the National Aeronautic Association govern the race.

The balloons shall be inflated from the Curtiss-Wright-Reynolds Airport, Chicago, Illinois and start made September 2, unless posponed by the referee on account of the weather, or vote of majority of pilots, or other operating difficulties.

The Capacity of competing balloons must bot exceed 2,200 cubic meters (77,690.8 cu. ft.) plus a tolerance of 5%. The Contest Committee of the national Aeronautic Association reserves the right of control and verification in conformity with F.A.I. rules of measuring.

Inflation gas will be mixed gas having an ascensional force of approximately 40 lb. per 1000 cu. ft.

Each pilot at the time of start must be in possession of the sporting and pilots' license of his country.

In conformity with the F. A. I. regulations, the contestants are required to send a telegram immediately after landing to the National Aeronautic Association, Washington, D. C., stating the time and place of landing and the name of the nearest city.

The flight record and landing certificate, duly made out, must be sent by Registered Mail, within twenty-four hours after landing to the President of the National Aeronautic Association.

Contestants are required to indicate the point of landing accurately by means of reference marks which can be easily located on the map furnished each contestant.

In case of landing in Canada, the contestant is required to promptly telegraph the Department of National Defense, Ottawa, Canada, requesting instructions for re-entry to the United States of personnel and equipment.

In conformity with the general international aeronautical provisions, each balloon at night must carry 6.1 meters (20 ft.) underneath, for warning, a white light visible from 3 kilometers (2 mi.) in every direction. Each balloon must carry in view its identification mark or number, its name and its national flag.

The pilot alone is responsible in case of violations of the national and international aeronautical provisions.

Intermediate landings are prohibited. Conforming to the decision of the Bureau of the F.A.I. on January 11, 1926, attention of competitors is called tot he following articles of the General Regulations.

Class A. "A balloon is considered as stopped when any of its essential equipment is no longer carried along and supported statically by it."

"The time of stop shall be that given in the route log, which shall be in agreement with the landing certificate and with the readings of the control instruments."

For duration records:

"If a stop occurs at night, or out of sight of any inhabitant, the fact shall be mentioned in the route log.

"A contestant upon landing, who is not in possession of his, equipment comprising the envelope, the basket and the net, if any is used, shall be considered out of the contest, and his performance will not be authenticated for the purposes of records."

"Every voluntary stop shall be considered as a landing. The contestant shall enter in the route log, all landings, together with their exact duration."

"in the case of aircraft of Class A, an involuntary stop shall be considered as a landing only if its duration shall exceed fifteen minutes. However, all stops shall be entered in the route log.

"Contestants landing in the water and receiving help from a boat, will be declared out of the race without any further penalty in accordance with Art. 128. F. A. I. Regulations.

It is prohibited to disembark either assistant or passenger.

Strict penalties will be provied for any act which might entail danger to the public, particularly throwing out full ballast bags, carelessness in starting, etc.

Each balloon must carry its national flag as well as the colors of the club which it represents.

In case special radio weather reports are broadcast for the benefit of contestants, they will be given in the several languages of the contestants.
