SPEED TABLE This table will enable you to determine the average speed in miles per hour of each airplane as it makes one complete lap of either the five or ten mile course. For example: An airplane that takes 1 minute, 5 seconds to make one complete lap of the five-mile course, is travelling 276.923 miles per hour. Inaugurated at the 1932 National Air Races, this feature resulted in the setting of the existing world mark for maximum speed when Maj. James H. ("Jimmie") Doolittle, former Army flier and manager of the Shell aviation department, put his barrel-like Gee Bee over the course at an average of 294.38 miles per hour. Shattering of this record is confidently expected with the $2,000 purse posted by the Shell corporation as a prize at which to shoot. The builders of several high speed ships that failed to reach Los Angeles have bent every effort to eliminate the "bugs" that kept their planes out of the national meet. One of these ships is reported to have a high speed of 360 miles an hour. Another has shown 275 miles per hour at three-quarters throttle, and engineers estimate its minimum speed to be 340 miles an hour.
