THE UNION AIR TERMINAL

by Maxine Finley

Third ranking airport in the United States, Union Air Terminal was built as a complete unit in 1929-30 with an original investment of approximately $2,000,000.00. With its site selected by eminently practical business men, and with the same ownership maintained since its inception, Union Air Terminal today ranks superior to any other airport in Southern California.
The thorough survey made into the economic factors of distance, highways, traffic, ground transportation, accessibility to areas of quality population and service to the general public, as well as flying conditions, before locating Union Air Terminal at Burbank has long since proved the wisdom of this choice.
Based now at Union Air Terminal are three air transport companies: United Air Lines, Western Air Express, and TWA. Thirty-four of their scheduled airmail and transport ships take off and land daily at the terminal, which has a U. S. Air Mail Field Post Office to expedite the service.
Three 24-hour charter and flying instruction services, those of Paul Mantz, M. C. Harvey and Joe Lewis, are operated out of Union Air Terminal, and aside from private craft owners, tenants include Pacific Airmotive Corp., Vega Airplane Co., Bendix Corp., Rogers Aircraft Co., and the B. G. Co.
Union Air Terminal has the Department of Commerce rating of A1A, highest for complete servicing and ground facilities, second highest for landing areas, highest for lighting equipment for night flying. It contains 234 acres, 200 of which are landing areas with five-fingered paved runways, 3650 x 300 ft., intersecting at the center of the field.
Buildings on the airport include a beautiful steel and concrete administration building and its annex,
