LOCKHEED AIRPLANES WORLD RENOWNED

Daily, from the far corners of the globe come reports of the success of the transport airplanes built by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. From the frozen tundra of the Alaskan wilderness to the sub-tropical clime of Brazil, Lockheed has carried the gospel of American aviation.
The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, whose main manufacturing plant is located in Burbank, California, one mile from Union Air Terminal, the West Coast's busiest airport, is the world's largest manufacturer of medium sized, high speed, twin engined, commercial transport planes. Since a structural reorganization was effected in 1932, the Company has grown from a small plant employing less than 300 to a point where today, its efficient manufacturing processes and the fame of its three different transport types have placed it among the leaders of aviation's Hall of Fame.
The smallest plane built by Lockheed is a 6-passenger, 2-pilot transport, similar to the giant skyliners which criss-cross the United States daily. It was developed in a competition carried on by the United States Department of Commerce (in which it won first award). It has a top speed of nearly 230 miles per hour and has found a ready market around small airlines, corporations, and private individuals throughout the world.
The second model produced by Lockheed is a 10-passenger plane known as the Lockheed Electra. Nearly 150 of this type have been built and delivered to customers. Today, eleven airlines in the United States and a similar number of foreign airlines use this ship exclusively.
In July, 1937, Lockheed brought out its third and greatest transport. This is the Lockheed 14, which is acclaimed the world's fastest transport by aviation authorities and air travelers. Powered by two 850 horsepower engines and equipped to carry eleven passengers, two pilots and a stewardess, this "speed king" of the skies has a maximum speed of 250 miles per hour. Using less than 75% of the horsepower available in its two powerful engines, the plane cruises at 227 miles per hour and has a non-stop flying range in excess of 2000 miles.
A Lockheed 14, standard except for a few added instruments and the installation of larger fuel tanks, was flown by Howard Hughes and four companions around the world in slightly more than 91 hours. More recently, the same airplane made a sub-stratosphere hop across the country from Los Angeles in to New York to set a new record for commercial transports. In May another Lockheed 14, owned by Polish Air Lines, made a 16,500-mile flight from Union Air Terminal to Warsaw via Mexico, South America, the South Atlantic and Africa. Although no records were attempted on this flight, the trip was made with the same ease and regularity of operation as the air lines which daily operate into and out of Burbank on passenger service to all parts of the country.
The Lockheed company now employs 2700 persons at its factory here and at the present time is preparing for a record production during 1939. Principal business next year will be the construction and delivery of a fleet of 200 high-speed bombers to the British Air Ministry. The planes will be a military adaptation of the Lockheed 14 commercial plane and will rank among the world's fastest and finest military aircraft.

Union Air Terminal
(Continued from page 9)
housing the airmail post office a new modern garage and service station, and 5 modern steel and concrete hangars, with floor space of 159,052 square feet.
The U. S. Weather Bureau Airport Station for the entire southwest is located at Union Air Terminal. In charge of it is George M. French, Federal meteorological expert of many years' experience in Southern California.
It is from this office that five-hourly forecasts are made, balloons sent up daily for upper air charting, broadcasts of weather conditions are made, and frequent weather maps distributed.
Similarly, Union Air Terminal is regional headquarters for the extensive Department of Commerce Teletype Service, which supplies all transport lines, airports, commercial and private plane owners with up-to-the-minute weather reports gathered and consolidated from all the airways focusing on Los Angeles and from many additional off-system points.
KBLA, radio control tower for Union Air Terminal, and the Department of Commerce traffic control office for all Southern California, are housed in the top of the administration building. The control tower is also equipped to handle non-radio-equipped craft.
