Air Derby Seen Valuable as Test for Planes.

By ROBERT MOUNTSIER

Detroit, June 7. - The Bendix Trophy Race, most famous of the pre-war transcontinental speed competitions, will be resumed after the war, with greatly improved planes and a new generation of daring, war-trained pilots expected to make the ether hum between Los Angeles and the Bendix airport in New Jersey.
That Bendix Aviation has plans to revive the Derby of the air, which excited worldwide interest during nine years, from 1931 to 1939, was disclosed here by Herbert L. Sharlock, veteran Bendix executive, as we stood under the bronze trophy in his office.
The Trophy was first won by Jimmie Doolittle, then a major, and in succeeding years it helped make famous, also helped finance with its cash prizes totaling $27, 500, Capt. James Haislip, Roscoe Turner, Doug Davis, Ben Howard, Louise Thaden, Jacqueline Cochran and two-time winner Frank Fuller. The Doolittle time was 9 hours 10 minutes. The best time was made by Frank Fuller in 1939, which his average speed of 282 m.p.h. gave him 7 hours 14 minutes.
"It will be good to get back to years of peace, when we can largely devote ourselves to commercial and private planes," said Mr. Sharlock. "It was with the thought of stimulating the developmental and research phases of airfoil, engines and accessories that Bendix first sponsored the competitive character of the Bendix Trophy Race. The race's history definitely proved its inherent distinction as an ideal testing field of practical value and far-reaching results. When the Japs are smashed and our men of war are back home, this transcontinental race can again year after year blaze the way in finer mechanics, greater speed and greater safety which our superb air transportation systems of today have followed"
