TO GLIDER CHAMPS

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Eclipse Machine Division of Bendix Aviation Corporation again awarded its gold, silver and bronze trophies to the three top distance glider pilots participating in the 20th national soaring contest at Harris Hill, 5 miles from here.

Dr. Paul MacCready, Pasadena, Cal. meteorologist, won the Bendix gold trophy for flying his motorless craft 225 miles from Harris Hill to Simsbury, Conn. MacCready also took top honors in the competition scoring 1,889 points during the 10-day contest in July. The Bendix silver trophy went to Paul Schweizer, glider manufacturer here, who soared 204 miles to Hicksville, N.Y. and the Bendix bronze award was won by William Coverdale, a steel salesman of Chattanooga, Tenn., who flew 195 miles to Woodlawn, Md., near Baltimore.

Second highest score was recorded by Stanely W. Smith, an aeronautical engineer of Lyndonville, N.Y. who earned 1,677 points in the competition. The only woman competitor, Miss Elizabeth Woodward of Riderwood, Md., was named top national woman champion. She flew 190 miles to Teterboro, N.J. Club honors were taken by the Metropolitan Air Hoppers Soaring Club of Wurtsboro, N.Y.

Bendix offers its trophies at each national soaring contest held at Harris Hill which are sponsored by the Elmira Soaring Corporation in conjunction with the Soaring Society of America.
