SABER JETS TO PARTICIPATE IN BENDIX TROPHY RACE

Bill Shadel, CBS News of America, at 9:00A.M. over WDRC (Hartford, Conn.) and CBS Network:

SHADEL: "Aviation's greatest show, the national air races, opened today in Ohio, the preparations for the Bendix trophy demonstrated of B-47 jet bombers being organized in England. The story today as we switch to Fred Brophy in Dayton."

BROPHY: "All eyes are on the skies over Dayton this week end as the birth place of aviation, taking part in Ohio's 150th birthday celebration, becomes the hub of aeronautical interest during the National Aircraft show. One hundred thousand persons including top military and government leaders are expected to converge on the city over the week end. And among those present by Lt. General Victor Kuvinov of the Soviet Air Force.

"Highlight of the day will be the arrival about noon of the first of ten F-86 Saber jet fighters participating in the Bendix trophy race from Edwards Airforce base in California. This year the average speed is expected to be close to 600 miles an hour despite one or two refueling stops each pilot will make along the way. Also taking part in today's activities will be the Navy's famed Blue Angels flying their F-9-F panther jets through a series of high speed maneuvers.

"All military services are taking part in the gigantic air program. Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Marion Karl who last week flew a Douglas Skyrocket to a new altitude record will participate, and a series of sonic booms will signal the start of the
