BENDIX SPEED PILOTS TO TRY 'COPTER FERRY

DAYTON, Ohio -- When the helicopter ferry service goes into action at the National Aircraft Show here, jet airmen racing for new speed records will also face the problem of learning how to enjoy "standing still" in air.

The shuttle service will carry ten Sabrejet pilots racing cross-country in a 1,900-mile speed dash sponsored by the Bendix Aviation Corporation. These airmen will race at 600-plus miles per hour from Edwards Air Force Base in California to the finish line at the Cox Municipal Airport, then go on to land at Patterson Air Force Base, 10 1/2 miles from the Cox field.

Before they can even change from supersonic flying suits they will be put on helicopters and carried back to the show. It will add up to some 8 minutes extra flying time but the helicopter will take about as much time as it took to travel 100 miles during the Bendix trophy race.
