DOOLITTLE: "I don't think there's any limit to the speed of planes. I think we will be flying in rockets. But these things happen in stages. I would say that there is a practical limit for the next few years. That would be in the order of 600 miles an hour. Just under mach one or just under supersonic speed.
"In due course of time I'm satisfied that we will be traveling outside the earth's atmosphere on a ballistic path and making the trip from New York to Paris in less than an hour; from New York to San Francisco or Los Angeles in only a little over half an hour."
