Sponsorship by Bendix Corporation is predicated on encouraging experimental work toward the development of higher speeds and new continental speed records. Since 1951 the event has been confined strictly to military jet aircraft and records set in the past have been eclipsed many times over. Doolittle's winning speed was 223 miles per hour in 1931 flying a Laird Solution, while the present record which was set in 1954 by Air Force Capt. Edward Kenny is 616.208 miles per hour. Capt. Kenny set his record in a Republic F-84F Thunderstreak. This year's speed dash will be flown in North American F-100C Super Sabres.

The course for this year's event will be from George Air Force Base, Victorville, California, to Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma City. Captain Kenny's course was flown from Edwards Air Force Base, California, to Dayton, Ohio; sits for the Aircraft Show that year.

Colonel Carlos Talbott, 450th Fighter-Day Wing, Foster AFB, Texas, won the 1955 event which was run from George AFB to Philadelphia. His average speed was 610.726 mph, approximately 6 mph behind the record. Adverse wind conditions were a factor in the 1955 event which was postponed one day as a result of inclement weather on the opening day of the 1955 Show.

Show officials are confident a new Bendix mark will be established in this event this year.
