AIR-WAR HEROES TO BATTLE FOR BENDIX TROPHY

George Air Force Base, Victorville, Calif. -- Combat-toughened Tactical Air Command pilots with 15 battle decorations and over 300 missions among them will battle it out in the renowned Bendix Trophy classic, opening feature of the National Aircraft Show in Oklahoma City, Sept. 1.

The list includes three pilots who hold the Distinguished Flying Cross, three with the Air Medal, one Silver Star, one Air Medal with two clusters, two Air Medals with three Oak Leaf Clusters, two Air Medals, one Commendation Ribbon, and a Purple Heart.

Capt. Manuel J. Fernandez Jr., America's leading living jet ace with fourteen and one-half "kills" to his credit, heads the list. He holds the Distinguished Service Cross, the Air Medal, and the Silver Star.

Capt. Robert A. Farnsworth was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with two clusters, after flying 20 combat missions in Korea.

Capt. Aubrey C. Edinburgh received the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters, for his Korean combat missions.

Capt. Robert A. Madden after flying 23 combat missions in Korea, was shot down and spent 15 months as a prisoner of war. He was released in August, 1953. He holds the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
