| April 23" 68. | Roberts B.S. Rockingham Co N.C. | April 10" 1868. States that on the night ins't. as he was returning to his home from a public meeting he was attacked by one Robt. H. Ward, a lawyer of Rockingham County for his expressed intention to vote for the Constitution. That he cannot obtain justice as no Lawyer will take the case in hand against another member, that he is an old man, and thinks it great injustice to allow such conduct to go unpunished, and asks to be protected from further insults, and attacks of a like nature. |   | Head Quarters 2nd Military District Charleston S.C. Respectfully returned to Lieut Thos. Wilhelm, Post Adjutant. Upon investigation I found that the difficulty grew out of personal controversy, and is entirely a civil matter.
Mr Roberts has taken my advice and indicted Mr Ward before the Grand Jury on the 29" of April, for his offense against the peace and dignity of the State.
