finding the gentler expressions of his character, forgetting that the sterner & most resolute ones were required there. But there is likeness enough to show at a glance who is represented, while the expression, attribute, & heroic size, correspond well with the place, his office, & the man in that office. I think there is a decided choice in the position from which you look at it, as to the result. As seen from the front, a little to the left, & pretty well back, the likeness is the best & expression too.  

You may well regard it as a successful work. And I have no doubt that this will be the opinion of the public & its permanent & settled judgement - and it certainly has a noble position, in that gem of a Capitol, or among those Battle Flaggs- to have embodied so much of the history of the State successfully, & set it before the public for all ensuing time, in that enduring & impressive form, - must be gratifying to you, as it is to us, & you are to be congratulated upon your success.
