Monday, May 25.
Went to Lee & Shephard saw a sample sheet.
Went to the State House and read all the morning in the Library. Whittier's Prose [[?]] and a portion of de Quincy's letters &c Saw the Sec. Mr Hayden gave me Albert [[?]] Sketch of the Life of John A. Andrew. Wrote until near six for him. 

Home a letter from Leedie telling me of having met Mr Johnson it is singular that they should meet. Wrote a letter to [[?]]  
Read McCauley's England until quite late when I fell asleep 
Mr Wells Brown and wife called to see me

Tuesday, May 26.
At the State House today writing was introduced to Dr J G Palfrey former Sec. State Senator and more recently Post Master. In Eve visit to Mr Phillips who gave me a note to admit me into the Tremont Temple to the Freedmen Meeting and was Charmed with Dr Tompkins of London he says he has devoted the remainder of his life to the service of those worthy but oppressed people he spoke of the unchristian prejudice against us and spoke of Chester as a "[[?]] in [[?]]" Hugh L Bond of Maryland Judge Russell, and Mr Ware followed
