13 Pomeworth St., Stoneham, Mass., March 24, 1929 Dear Folks, The packages arrived O. K. one morning when I was in bed, so I had a regular party all my own. Berenice and Theodore had set a string of pearl beads — nice ones, — not the kind I bought for myself; and a check for $5.00. John Hollis and Bunny said a nice pair of gloves which go well with my coat, a pair of black silk stockings, some handkerchiefs, and an enlarged snapshot of myself in a frame the size of a postcard. Berenice has since sent (since Christmas) six weeks ago. She had her sputum analyzed and found it negative. It was the first I knew that Miss G. ever thought she was affected. Her urine, however, showed a trace of albumin, and the doctor advised letting up on meats, eggs, fish, some vegetables, etc. I am surprised she had no more than a trace. She apparently thinks she is letting up, but last Sunday for breakfast she ate 3 sausages, 1 or 2 eggs – coffee – fruit, toast, etc. Dinner: chops vegetables etc. — lunch liver pudding et al.; supper: I've forgotten, but I think there was cheese, fruit, etc. Besides she drinks I don't know how much Ovaltine – which is supposed to be a meal in itself, and yet she says she is hungry and doesn't eat much. To-day she had 1 orange, 1/2 grape fruit, 2 eggs, toast and 2 cups coffee for breakfast, yet she was "hungry" before I was for dinner; 2 large potatoes, roast lamb, spinach, turnip, 2 slices toast, Roquefort cheese, cranberry sauce, gravy, coffee; yet a few minutes ago she was in to see me saying she was hungry. [] Her capacity and intelligence and self-denial are profound! Many thanks for sending the packages. Take postage out of the extra dollar you say I sent, please. How did it happen to be extra, though? Love Lena []
