This morning I got my cereal all poured out ready for the milk when I discovered it hadn't come. I hurried out to a lunch room and was comfortably devouring my doughnut and coffee and thinking about and rather enjoying the democracy of coal bearers - niggers and all others eating together with their hats on and letting my eyes roam about when they encountered a sign telling us to see if our checks were punched for the right amount. Never doubting but out of curiosity - I looked and there it

was 15¢. I had thought it was 10 and had not stopped to replenish my purse in which there was only 11¢. But the doughnuts and coffee were almost out of sight so what could they do or I? All I could think of was to tell the circumstance which I did with a promise to reimburse the concern to-morrow morning but I couldn't help thinking of what I had heard about peoples having to wash dishes, etc. before now and I didn't want to be late to school although it wouldn't take long to earn 5¢ to be sure at present wages - I didn't really think I should be held up of course but it just gives one
