Mary has been used up. She hurt her foot three weeks ago and her foot and leg swelled and she hasn't been able to step on it. Ella Smith came out to care for her sister Minnie Hunt who was sick so Mary was alone when she wrote the letter. 

Mary is getting better. She said she knew how to pity me. She wrote a bit about Alice and wondered where she was and she was here to hear me read the letter
