(Painter in Amour at the Music Box Theatre) chooses RESTAURANT CHARLOTTE, 145 W. 44th St., B'way & 6th

Restaurant Charlotte, a sleekly contemporary upscale retreat, is nestled within the lobby floor of the Millennium Broadway Hotel New York.

This quiet dining room has hosted Brad Pitt, Time and Nina Zagat, Blythe Danner and cast members of Chicago and Say Goodnight Gracie. (The Millennium also houses the history-laden Hudson Theatre, so its appeal to the acting profession is self-evident.)

Chef Alexandra Parada produces meals of uncommon skill and sensibility, and we cordially recommend - as did adroit waiter Anthony - grilled rib eye steak in a Cabernet sauce; grilled Atlantic salmon; seafood ravioli stuffed with lobster, shrimp, crab and cheese; and at least one elegant dessert!

RESTAURANT CHARLOTTE is open daily from 11:30 am-3 pm; 5:30-10:45 pm. A la carte dinner entrees $18-$30. Superior wine list. Special attention to theatregoers. CC. Informal dress. Lavish weekend brunch $33.50. Res. sug. 789-7508.

(Nala in The Lion King at the New Amsterdam Theatre) chooses OLD SAN JUAN RESTAURANT
765 Ninth Ave., 51st & 52nd

One can all but hear luscious strains of the tango upon entering Old San Juan Restaurant because owner Adela Svei is forever linked to such music. Her old-time La Milonga was one of our town's most colorful dining spots, and now all the verve and dash of that fabled showplace have been recaptured at Old San Juan.

You're apt to run into the casts of Oklahoma! and Les Miz here, digging in for laughter and good eating. Giovanni, our waiter, touted authentic Puerto Rican and Argentinean-accented treats like spicy (but not too) tamale, roast leg of pork, Creole gumbo and homemade meat pies. Portions are large and prices are feel-good.

So, if you like your meals and atmosphere earthy, savor the food at Old San Juan and join the throngs of reveling returnees!

OLD SAN JUAN RESTAURANT is open Mon.-Sat. 11 am-11 pm. Sun. till 10:30 pm. A la carte entrees $6-18.95. Daily specials. Wines, Priv. parties & celebrations. Casual dress. CC. Catering, takeout. Res. sug. 262-7013

after theatre

VICE VERSA This contemporary inviting bite-to-banquet find, masterminded by that food-savvy trio Franco, Daniele and chef Stefano, remains a personal fave of Lea (Flower Drum Song) Salonga, and is a key spot for a post-theatre whirl. Peter, our waiter, pointed us to airy treats like veal medallions and fresh halibut with pistachios. Ahh! Open six days till 11 P.M. (cl. Sun). 325 W.51st St. (8th & 9th Aves.) 399-9291.

HEARTLAND BREWERY AND CHOPHOUSE
Owners Jon and Oren Bloostein -the Brews Bros. of the food world! - serve only one brand of coffee at this grand restaurant/beer haven: Oren's Daily Roast. Chef Richard's menus are well-priced and compatible with Heartland's dazzling array of beers (let mgr. Kristina and waiter Michael advise you). Mon.-Sat. till 11 P.M. Sun. 10 P.M. 127 W. 43rd St. (B'way & 6th Ave.) 646-366-0235.
