ing out like a mother kangaroo.

Business men have been carrying bags (by any other name) for years. What else are all those attache cases? And the briefcases they swing along with? They're less likely to contain yesterday's correspondence than a clean shirt, a dirty book, a razor and his assortment of calm-down, pep-up pills.
So why not come out in the open? Call a bag a bag. And carry it without the pompous pretense that it's full of martyr's overwork to get done after dinner? I don't see anything "sissy" about something so practical.

To see what's up, currently, in bags for men, I went to Mark Cross, a store that goes its own semiconservative way in first-class leather goods but nevertheless is credited with having quietly started up the over-shoulder bag idea for men over a year ago. Since then they're sold nearly 1,000 of these at $55 (opening page).
Other Mark Cross bags I'd consider suitable for any man are a canvas and leather zipped carryall, $35; a classic calfskin briefcase, $60 (never mind the alligator version at $450); a pigskin attache case, handsome at $85; a flat, perfectly plain, leather-lined leather envelope, zipped, 16 X 12, $20. Also, they have the absolutely slimmest billfolds (before those bulky credit cards go in, anyways), that start at $13 in pin seal.
Other stores are fiddling with bags for men. I saw a good one in the men's department at Bonwit Teller. Walnut-colored canvas with dark-brown leather bands and strap, $17.
Lord & Taylor, among others, will have Givenchy's black cowhide over-shoulder bag in late October. This one starts out half-full -- with Monsieur de Givenchy men's toiletries, all for $35.
How about it, fellows? Baggies for all? Or is that just too sensible?
