SHOW BIZ PADRE Father Hartke: His Life and Legacy to the American Theater by Mary Jo Santo Pietro, one of his students, is a biography of the priest who, with Walter Kerr, Leo Brady and Josephine McGarry, founded the famed Speech and Drama Department at Catholic University (CUA) in Washington, D.C. It was at this school that Yankee Doodle Boy, by Kerr and Brady, was first done, inspiring the famed film Yankee Doodle Dandy that won James Cagney an Oscar. CUA's production of Jean and Walter Kerr's brilliant revue, Thank You, Just Looking, came to Broadway as Touch and Go, produced by George Abbott and successful in N.Y. and London.

Alan Schneider, the brilliant director of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; Bob Moore, actor and director of many Tony Award-nominated shows; Mart Crowley, author of The Boys in the Band; Ed McMahon; Jon Voight; Susan and Chris Sarandon and countless other celebrities attended CUA and brought it international fame.

Ms. Santo Pietro has written a very honest portrait of Father Hartke - warts and all. As she writes, he was the biggest name-dropper of all time. He was entitled. He was a close friend of every American president, from Truman to Reagan. He also was partly responsible for naming the performing arts center in Washington, D.C. the Kennedy Center (although he hated the opening attraction, Leonard Bernstein's Mass, which he said was not a Mass but a bar mitzvah). He also hosted the return to an American stage of Princess Grace Kelly (reading poems) and the final stage performance of Helen Hayes, in Long Day's Journey Into Night. THE KAUFMAN TOUCH I have always considered George S. Kaufman (co-author of You Can't Take It With You, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Dinner at Eight and Stage Door) the wittiest man of the 20th century. I thought I had heard all his famous witticisms, but no.... The other day, someone recalled a story that I had never heard before. One day, while in a building in downtown Manhattan, Kaufman witnessed a man and woman engaging in sex in an office building across the street. Noticing a sign above them with the building's phone number, he called the number and watched as the man stopped his love-making to pick up the phone. In a very basso voice, Kaufman bellowed, "This is GOD. Have you no shame?"

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER: GOLDEN BOY
Fans of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber are in for a colossal treat. Decca Broadway/UTV Records, a division of UME, has just released a magnificent new collection called Andrew Lloyd Webber Gold: The Definitive Hits Collection. The CD, which contains his biggest hits and best-loved songs, spans 30 years of renditions by such superstars as Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Also featured is the previously unreleased track of Brightman's rendition of "Whistle Down the Wind," from Lloyd Webber's production of the same name. Each of the 18 selections has been newly digitally remastered. No other composer of his generation has scored as many popular hits as Andrew Lloyd Webber - and the best of them take curtain calls on Gold: The Definitive Hits Collection.
