[left page] A New Home on Broadway After thirty dramatic years Off-Broadway, Manhattan Theatre Club is ready for The Next Stage- on Broadway! Construction is under way on the restoration of the historic Biltmore Theatre on West 47th Street, in the heart of the Broadway theatre district. Opening in fall 2003 and joining our stages at City Center, this new theatre will enable MTC to further its mission to nurture new plays and musicals through the full spectrum of artistic development. This permanent Broadway home will renew MTC's commitment to: THEATRE- With a Broadway stage on which to launch new work, MTC will introduce more great plays and musicals into the American theatre repertoire. AUDIENCES- With a 100% increase in available seats, MTC will attract larger, more diverse audiences, provide subscribers with greater scheduling flexibility and offer increased ticket availability to the general public. EDUCATION- With greater capacity, MTC will expand its Education Program and increase the number of participating students by nearly 70%. ARTISTS- With a Broadway theatre, MTC will provide Tony eligibility and increased compensation to artists who work on and off stage. From Mae West's 1928 Pleasure Man to the Federal Theatre Project's Living Newspaper plays in the early 1930s, the Biltmore Theatre has always been home to artists ready to expand the horizons of American theatre. Some of the many new plays that were presented on its stage include Brother Rat (1936), My Sister Eileen (1940), No Exit (1946), The Heiress (1947), Barefoot in the Park (1963) and Hair (1968). Unfortunately, the 1980s saw a decline in the number of productions at the Biltmore. Despite receiving landmark status for its interior, the theatre went dark in 1987 and subsequently suffered extensive deterioration and damage due to neglect, weather, fire, and vandalism. MTC looks forward to re-lighting this magnificent theatre as a new Broadway home for its expanding family of actors, playwrights and audiences. The addition of a Broadway stage to our existing campus of theatres and rehearsal spaces will secure MTC's role as a leader in New York's cultural community. With The Next Stage, MTC will be uniquely positioned to produce new work for the American stage both on and off Broadway. To fund the restoration of the historic Biltmore Theatre and to provide much-needed endowment support that will ensure its ongoing ability to bring theatre to the widest possible audiences, MTC is conducting a $35 million capital campaign. This major fundraising effort is a partnership between the public and private sectors; generous individual and institutional donors have already committed more than $24 million toward this goal. With $11 million yet to be raised, we are counting on you to help us reach The Next Stage.
