STAGE DIRECTIONS FROM THE LEAGUE
BY BEN PESNER
Autumn Abundance on the Great White Way

This fall the Great White Way welcomes a bumper crop of new productions. "Broadway's remarkable resurgence is due in part to a healthy mix of shows for all tastes," says League President Jed Bernstein. The new season boasts musicals that test the boundaries of the genre and plays that feature familiar names, both onstage and behind the scenes.

Several shows in particular prove that musical fare on Broadway is innovative and varied. Modern-dance maven Twyla Tharp has conceived, choreographed, and directed Movin' Out, based on 24 Billy Joel songs. Filmmaker Baz (Moulin Rouge) Luhrmann's staging of La Bohéme is not your grandfather's Puccini, but it will give Broadway audiences the chance to compare Rent (now staring *NSYNC's Joey Fatone) to the opera on which it is loosely based.

Equally Parisian, though as intimate as Bohéme is grand, Michel Legrand's chamber musical Amour tells the story of a man who discovers he has the ability to walk through walls. And set in Transylvania, the "gothic musical comedy" Dance of the Vampires stars Broadway's original Phantom, Michael Crawford.

Both Man of La Mancha and The Boys from Syracuse are revivals of shows based on classical fare. The former is a popular tuner adapted from Cervantes' Don Quixote; Rodgers & Hart based their Boys on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. Another Rodgers work returns to Broadway in a completely new version: M. Butterfly playwright David Henry Hwang has rewritten the 1958 musical Flower Drum Song, keeping intact the Rodgers & Hammerstein score and the San Francisco Chinatown setting.

You'll see plenty of star names attached to the fall's new plays. Carol Burnett's comedy Hollywood Arms, written with her daughter Carrie Hamilton, stars Linda Lavin. Say Goodnight Gracie features Frank Gorshin ("Batman"'s The Riddler) as the late funnyman George Burns, while the play-with-music Imaginary Friends features Cherry Jones and Swoosie Kurtz portraying literary giants Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman.

Revivals of Dinner at Eight and Moliére's Tartuffe round out the fall season joining this summer's Hairspray, I'm Not Rappaport and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune on the boards--though keep your eyes open for last-minute additions to the Broadway roster!

The best way to get information on these shows and more is to call The Broadway Line® toll-free at (888) BROADWAY, sponsored by Continental Airlines and The New York Times.
