Manhattan Theatre Club Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season Over the past 25 years, under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, Manhattan Theatre Club has grown from a prolific showcase into one of the country's most respected theatre organizations, originating, producing and distributing some of the finest works in American Theatre. Manhattan Theatre Club productions have been critically acclaimed across the country and around the world. Two seasons ago Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion! won two Tony Awards including Best Play and last season August Wilson's Seven Guitars was a Tony Award. Other significant productions include Stephen Sondheim's Putting It Together, the Broadway production of A Small Family Business; Broadway and Off-Broadway transfers of After Play, Lips Together Teeth Apart, Sight Unseen, Mass Appeal, Loot and Sylvia; the Tony Award-winning Ain't Misbehavin'; and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Crimes of the Heart and The Piano Lesson. Manhattan Theatre Club is concerned not only with the dramatic product presented on its stage, but also with the creative process. Playwrights, directors, actors and designers are attracted to MTC for its belief in an extended, collective effort to enrich and give life to a playwright's work. That is why actors such as Adam Arkin, Christine Baranski, Stockard Channing, Richard Greenberg, Nathan Lane, Bernadette Peters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dianne Wiest, Sam Waterston; playwrights such as Alan Ayckbourn, Athol Fugard, A. In addition, for plays are performed in the 150-seat Stage II theatre, which provides a much needed alternate space for the development and nurturing of plays and playwrights of promise. Since its inception in 1970, Manhattan Theatre Club has also presented its acclaimed Writers in Performance series, a major forum for readings, performances and lectures by eminent writers and artists. Past participants have included such renowned artists as Isabel Allende, Seamus Heaney, William Kennedy, and Toni Morrison, in Addition to readings by young writers of merit. In addition to MTC's comprehensive Education Program reaches over 3,000 school children in the metropolitan area annually and seeks to have an impact on the future theatre-going community by helping students experience theatre with greater understanding and thereby increasing their interest in attending live theatre. Recently, MTC has renewed its commitment to the development of new American musicals by creating a Musical Theatre Program. The goals of the Program are to discover and nurture new musical theatre artists and to create an environment conducive to the development of new work. Through a series of presentations, readings, and workshops, the Program has identified a number of new musicals which should be gracing MTC's stages in the near future. Looking forward to the 21st century, Manhattan Theatre Club will continue to encourage, nurture, and develop important plays and playwrights, offering the public intelligent theatre of distinction.
