PASSING STAGES

MUSIC MAN
Emery Davis, head of Meyer Davis Music, has been musical director for the Tony Awards party since 1964. He is the son of Meyer Davis, whose orchestras have for decades played for kings, presidents, debutante balls and other society functions. "I remember that first Tony party I conducted on May 24, 1964," he recently told us. "It was at the Hilton Hotel and Hello, Dolly! won ten Tonys that night. It was quite a party."
One of Mr. Davis's duties for this gala event during the years has been to learn the obscure songs from the nominated musicals and play them. Cast members of these shows attend the party, and they enjoy dancing to the lesser known songs from their shows.
Davis particularly remembers the 1975 Tony Award party. "That was the year that The Wiz won several awards," he recalls, "including Best Musical. I played the hit tune from the show, 'Ease On Down the Road,' and a wonderful thing happened. Some of the dancers from the show got up and started doing a lively dance of their own invention and pretty soon they had the whole ballroom doing it. It was just like a scene from a movie!"

TONY TOMES
Theatre lovers who are interested in knowing all there is to know about the Tony Awards are directed to a book called The Tony Award--A Complete Listing of Winners and Nominees with a History of the American Theatre Wing, edited by the Wing's President, Isabelle Stevenson (Crown Publishers). Introductory essays detail the history of the Wing and the Awards, followed by a complete listing of the nominees and winners from 1947 through 1989. If you buy the book, you can send for annual supplements that list the latest nominees and winners. The book is available by sending a check or money order for $15.95 (includes postage and handling) made out to the American Theatre Wing at 250 W. 57th St., NY, NY 10107.
Still available in book stores is another book called The Tony Award Book--Four Decades of Great American Theater by Lee Alan Morrow (Abbeville Press Publishers, New York, $19.98). This handsome, coffee table volume is illustrated with over 200 photographs, many in striking color, including onstage shots and rare backstage scenes, posters, PLAYBILL covers, and original sketches for sets and costumes. The text covers four decades of great American theatre with detailed information on actors, playwrights, lyricists, composers, directors, choreographers, producers and designers. In addition, there's a massive appendix of all Tony nominees and winners from 1947 through 1987.

"BROADWAY HOUR" PREVIEWS THE TONY AWARDS
"The Broadway Hour," the nationally syndicated radio show about the people, music and news of Broadway, now in its second year, is going to conduct its own Tony Award event. In mid-May it's going to invite listeners to send in their own votes for the season's most outstanding play and most outstanding performance by an actor and actress in a drama, and the same for outstanding musical and performers in that genre. Winners will receive a special "Getaway To Broadway" weekend package that includes hotel overnight stays, complimentary restaurant reservations, theatre tickets and gift certificates to shop for their favorite theatre memorabilia.
"The Broadway Hour" is hosted by Les Davis of "Make Believe Ballroom" fame and can be heard every Saturday morning on WNEW AM 1130 from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. in the tri-state area. In Boston it can be heard at the same time on WRCA AM 1330.
