Dear Folks

This is Candlemas day & cold & windy. but the sun is shining bright. so according to that, we have not seen the last of Old Man Winter. nevertheless it has been a very mild one & we can afford to suffer a little for the next two months.

We are sorry so much that is terrible & no one can help, is going on around us. what will come next we are not prepared to say. we live in fear. I am thankful for my mercies. my cold is much better. it is gradually working off, sleeping well, no cough, no fever, appetite much better. of course I feel weak from the effects. on the whole am as well as could be expected & guess I will live to see a good many birthdays, but hope not too many. us my usefulness is fast ebbing away. it is Careta's birthday, so the four cronies are riding off to some eating place & giving her a dinner & also a present & then coming to Laura's to play cards. Phoebie Hill fell & broke her wrist, but she is going to be with them for all that, & will play cards, she is Christian Science they say. Nelly is going with them.

They say Barbara Marden is very smart. both in books & music she is going to Wellesley College after she gets through H.S.
