I heard an odd bird note off to the left & a hasty look revealed a pair of Imperial Ivory-billed Woodpeckers near the top of a large dead pine. My assistant was far in the rear with the shot gun but my companion, Mr. Winton (G.B.), was quickly on the ground & stalked the birds within easy shot & fired at the nearest one.

Both left the tree apparently unhurt & as one of them made off through the high tree tops a long shot with a charge of 5's brought it to the ground. These were the first living birds I had ever seen of this species, & they are fine birds. Near sunset we came to the border of the forest on
