To the east the slope is longer to the Valley of Mexico which is [[strikethrough]] almost a thousand [[/strikethrough]] about 700 ft. lower.

On the summit of Salazar, in the open park, was fought one of the early battles of the Mexican independence and the spot is marked by a monument.

These mountains are noted as being the former haunt of bands of brigands. The highway from Mex. to Toluca crosses here and, even as little traffic as passes over it today, it is necessary to keep a company of soldiers at Salazar who picket the road at several points daily.
