Getman Miss D.F.
Pine Bluff. Ark.
Dear Madam:
Your letter of the 23rd inst advising me of the arrival of Miss Holmes at Pine Bluff is received. In view of the small attendance there at this time it seems desirable that she should go forward to Arkadelphia where we have a new house but no teacher. I suggest this in the absence of instructions from Shipherd. Please consult her wishes & advise me. She will be furnished transportation.
There is a school house at Lewisville but it will not be occupied at present.

Sir,
Please inform me if there is a suitable boarding place at Arkadelphia for a lady teacher, and whether the school house would be likely to be filled should a school be opened at this time.
I will endeavor to have a teacher transferred from Pine Bluff to Arkadelphia if assured of a good attendance and a home for the teacher, as the attendance at the former place does not warrant the employment of two teachers at present.
Very resp'y,
Your obt Servant,
Wm. M. Colby,
Supt. Edn.-

Sir,
I would respectfully request information as to the present temper of the people of Lewisville and vicinity toward freedmen and freedmen's Schools; and what encouragement, if any, there is for a lady or gentleman to open a school for freedmen in the new School house.
If any competent person there will open the school as a public school under the new law, they should be encouraged to do so. If a teacher is desired from abroad let the citizens extend an invitation and retrieve their bad name.
Very respectfully,
Wm. M. Colby,
Supt. Edn.-
