General:

I have the honor to enclose herewith account of James O. Lyman for two months'
service as teacher of freedmen at Fort Smith Ark. In October 1868, Mr. Lyman was commissioned by the A.M. association without pay to teach in our new building at Ft Smith, and arrived at Little Rock on his way there with the expectation of receiving a nominal salary from the Bureau.

Having contributed largely of his earnings the previous to the Am. Miss Assocn and having a mother to support in Wisconsin he felt compelled to ask a guarantee of at least his expense before proceeding, which upon consultation
