Indiana Friends with whom this Bureau is and for five years past has been cooperating for the education of the Freedmen. Previous to 1869, at which time the Union School came under your administration they had expended several thousand dollars in this city alone in sustaining schools and an orphan asylum for the colored people; and to their efforts joined with those of the department which I have the honor to represent in the city indebted for the establishment of the school above named which one year ago was become to no other school for white or colored children in the state. I am not informed of the intention of the Friends in regard to the future disposition of these grounds. Joseph Dickerson, Richmond, Ind., is their secretary.
