January 16th 70

Mrs. Stuart,
Washington, Ark.

Dear Madam:
Yours of the 9th enclosing a letter from Dr. Boyce came today. The situation at Washington pains one, but I am glad to be in possession of the facts. You do not say whether you have contracted with the trustee, but I presume you have not. You ought to decrease your contract as soon as possible, without manifesting undue anxiety passing as lightly as may be over these matters till that is accomplished, which will throw the responsibility upon the trustees under the school law and will in some measure release you. Anything said to those parties from this distance would not be likely to effect much; but if the house is damaged something may be done that will cost them dearly. You must not expect too much of those who but yesterday were chattels, nor be discouraged if we do not see the fruit of our labors. Your case, my dear Mrs. Stuart, is not an isolated one.
If the trustee declines to contract with you you will be at liberty to accept a good paying position at some other point if you so desire - but do not leave it till some one is sent down to take your place.
Hoping your situation is by this time pleasanter than when you wrote. I am, with kind regards,
Yours truly
Very Respectfully
Wm M. Colby
